South Africa Mission
Short-Term Missions Team Member Covenant

If my application for this trip is accepted, before we leave I fully agree to:

  1. Pray regularly for my team leader and team members.

  2. Attend all team meetings.

  3. Fulfill all preparation and logistical requirements (such as writing support letters within the required time frame, applying for passports, etc.).

I recognize that there is an incredible value in team unity and fully agree to:

  1. Prefer others – I will strive to lay down my rights and consider others before myself (Philippians 2:3).

  2. Be a peacemaker – I will be careful not be contentious or argumentative.

  3. Understand different personalities, backgrounds and weaknesses – through Christ will give grace and understanding to my leaders and team members when I see areas of weakness or differences.

And when in the field I fully agree to:

  1. Remember that I am a guest in a foreign country.  If my hosts are offended by something I do, I will do everything possible to correct the situation (i.e. Cover bare arms, exposed legs, etc.).

  2. Remember that I am a learner, not a teacher or instructor.  I may see procedures that seem inefficient to me, but I will not tell our hosts “how we do things in the states.”  I will be open to their ideas and ways and sincerely interested in learning about their culture.

  3. Respect the host’s view of Christianity.  I realize that I am to live out my faith in a new setting.

  4. Respect my team leaders and their decisions.

  5. Refrain from complaining and look instead for rewards that come when dealing with undesirable or unexpected circumstances.

  6. Refrain from making jokes about things that I don’t understand.

  7. Be sensitive to male/female dynamics.  I will be careful not to be alone with a member of the opposite sex at any time (other than spouse).  I will not be flirtatious with other team members or people we meet in the country.  I will abide by the appropriate cultural behaviors of the country (how to greet, address members of the opposite sex, etc.).

  8. Represent my Savior, Jesus, and Christian Church with integrity.

  9. Abstain from the consumption of alcoholic beverages and use of tobacco during the entire trip.
